We have gathered and put together a small handful of questions that are important when looking for a web developer. Below the questions are our answers to those questions. Do your research. There are many questions that we feel are important to know about the company that will be handling the development of your online image. Please feel free to ask if you have any others that you would like to know.
Q: Do you charge all or part of your fees before the project is finished?
A: This depends on the agreed upon cost of your website package. Normally, we charge 1/3rd of the final cost up front, and the remainder at the end of the project. If your site is a more expensive project, we are more than willing to split the costs more to make it easier for your business. If it is a less expensive package, we may charge you 1/2 up front, and bill you for the remainder once the project is completed. These terms will be agreed upon when the proposal is finalized.
Q: Do you have another client who would would be willing to talk to me?
A: Absolutely. If you see any website in our portfolio that you would like to have more information about, or would like to speak with the client in person, we will contact that client and verify that they are willing to hold a discussion with you. We will not provide contact information without confirming that each party is aware of it.
Q: Will I be able to edit any of the content myself
A: Yes. Our content management system, allows you to not only edit the content contained within your website, but allow you to modify imagery and nearly all other aspects of your website. There are levels of modification that may not be comfortable to a novice user, but the ability still exists. All aspects of our system are documented in such a way so that it is simple to understand. As our client list grows, so will the demands of our system. As a client, you are offered an upgrade each time we make a change to our system, at no additional charge. This way, the costs of development are shared amongst all of our clients allowing us to keep the costs of development at a reasonable rate.
Q: How often do you use HTML tables to layout pages?
A: All of our pages are laid out using CSS and XHTML. With some custom layouts that we have developed comes some tasks that can not be accomplished efficiently without the use of tables, but we still take our development to the next level by trying to avoid them.
Q: Do you use pre-purchased templates?
A: Talon-Designs does not purchase templates from other companies that resell them. All of our templates are created by hand by our staffing, and are coded in such a way that they efficiently utilize our database administration tool. We do however look over other design layouts, to come up with ideas. If you happen to find a site that fits what you need very well, let us know. We can recreate the layout, and make any adjustments to it that you may want, so that your website is uniquely yours.
Q: Do you use a shared hosting account, a Virtual Private Server, or a Dedicated Server to host websites?
A: Currently Talon-Designs is hosted on two separate shared hosting accounts. One is hosted at GoDaddy, and the other is hosted at Fused Network. There are a couple of reasons for this. The first and foremost is for redundancy. If something happens to the servers at one location, we have a separate location to use as a backup. The second reason is that since GoDaddy has become so big, we find that being able to host our administration tools there, is much more efficient. In addition to that, GoDaddy does not allow their servers to connect outside, or allow outside servers to connect to their databases. As our company grows, we intend to move our systems over to a dedicated server.
Q: How long have you been in the business of building websites?
A: Each person on our team, has been developing complex web pages for at least 5 years. The founder of our company has been developing simple to complex websites for well over 10 years.
Q: What web browsers do you use?
A: A better question, would be which browsers do we NOT use. Currently we develop our websites using Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer and Opera browsers. The reason for this, is that all browsers react differently to different elements on web pages. By utilizing all of the browsers at hand, and running vigourous tests against each of them, we are able to bring you and your visitors a website that looks the same no matter what browser that they use. We do however, personally prefer to use Firefox.
